9 Princes in Amber: A Chapter 7 Spoiler
Apr. 12th, 2025 09:24 pmToward the end of chapter 7 Corwin makes a snap decision that decides his fate for him. When Bleys is knocked off the cliff Corwin instinctively tosses his Trumps to Bleys, his ultimate means of escape. Random or Llewella would have taken him in,, Moire would have given him sanctuary in Rebma. Deidre would accept him. Gerard would probably intervene. But he literally throws that away.
Below is a spoiler about his decision. “But your blog is FULL of spoilers!” This is a very specific one that doesn’t pop up until later in the series.
We later find out that Fiona, Bleys, and Brand were their own magical cabal. They locked Brand up for their own safety. Fiona – one of those stupid, useless women with no political interest or ambition – was deeply DEEPLY involved in the goings on. The three of them were adepts at Trump use.
Bleys’ body is never recovered from the foot of the mountain and in fact we later see him alive.
“Oh! He must have used one of Corwin’s Trumps to get to safety!!”
Yeah, either that or he and Fiona were in contact the entire time and she would have pulled him to safety no matter what.
Corwin’s reaction was emotional and powerful and also completely useless. It wasn’t even useless in a “he did his best but Bleys wasn’t able to use them and died, Corwin threw away his chance.” It was useless in a “Bleys did not need these ever, he was fine, Corwin threw away his chance for nothing.”
Corwin is captured, tortured, and confined because of the red-headed cabal.
I love Fiona but also there’s a reason that Corwin flipped her card over at the start of the book and just instantly hated her. She’s powerful and she doesn’t play by his rules. She’s dangerous.
